The Leprosy Mission Trust India’s (TLMTI) hospitals, vocational training centres and community development projects observed World Health Day on April 7 with a variety of programmes, such as raising awareness on leprosy, stigma and depression in hospitals, educational institutions, and in the communities, through skits, painting competitions, street plays, leprosy champions sharing their experience on how they overcame the challenges of leprosy, and community meetings; organising blood donation camps; and organising medical check-ups for persons affected by leprosy.
TLMTI already has Counsellors in all its hospitals. These Counsellors look after the mental health of persons affected by leprosy. They help patients overcome emotional trauma when they are diagnosed with leprosy, and help them face social stigma and cope with various challenges posed by leprosy.
